3 Reasons Why Coconut Oil Is a Miracle for Hair
Coconut oil may be your home’s best-kept secret. Many of the products that you have in your cabinets can be used to benefit your hair. And the one product which is considered a miracle for hair is coconut oil.
At its very core, coconut oil is rich in antioxidants, offers antifungal and antibacterial properties and supports hair growth.
When you see models on television with picture-perfect hair, many of them have used coconut oil to increase their mane’s natural beauty. And unlike many hair care products, coconut oil doesn’t contain harmful ingredients that damage your hair.
Just look at how many hair care products contain alcohol – a lot – and they’re drying out your hair and leaving it brittle.
Reason #1 – Amazing Conditioner
When you condition your hair, you’re likely using a hair care product that is filled with harsh chemicals. While conditioner is less scary than shampoos, it can still cause your hair to end up dry, frizzy and less than perfect.
Coconut oil has been studied extensively and has been shown to reduce protein loss. In fact, this is the only oil studied that demonstrates that it can reduce protein loss in your hair.
What’s the big deal?
Protein loss is what will cause your hair to break and dry. Coconut oil prevents this drying. The lauric acid can penetrate into the shaft of the hair and nourish it with fatty acids, vitamin and minerals.
How to Use Coconut Oil as a Conditioner?
Using coconut oil as a conditioner is easy:
- Use ¼ – ½ a tablespoon of coconut oil.
- Warm in the palms of your hair.
- Massage through your hair and style as normal.
You can also use one tablespoon and rub through the shafts of your hair, covering it with a shower cap before letting it sit for 2 hours. This is recommended to restore hair. Adding in essential oils can also be beneficial.
Pay attention: This is the best coconut oil hair mask I have ever used. You should definitely try it out.
Reason #2 – Promotes Hair Growth
We’ve all seen the commercials where someone is frantically losing their hair and all of a sudden; they buy a “miracle” product that leaves them with a mane that even the world’s most famous models would envy.
These situations don’t happen. And you’ll be spending a lot of money for real hair growth – those products are expensive.
What’s the answer? Coconut oil, of course.
Your hair is naturally strengthened due to coconut oil penetrating the shaft of the hair, causing you to lose less hair overall. The health of your mane is more of an internal issue.
When you have internal issues, your hair will often thin and fall out. Studies have shown that Omega-3 fatty acids are critical for hair growth. You can get these fats from chia seeds, flax seeds, fish, and coconut oil.
And coconut oil will also increase blood circulation to the scalp, enhancing hair growth naturally.
How to Use Coconut Oil for Hair Growth?
If you want to boost hair growth, you’ll need to:
- Massage the oil into your hair.
- Continue to massage for 10 minutes.
- Repeat four times per week.
Keep in mind: You will only need to use one teaspoon of coconut oil every time.
Reason #3 – Combats Dandruff
Dandruff, you know those pesky white flakes of skin that end up on your shoulders, is a symptom of dry skin. When your scalp is dry, you’ll have dandruff eventually. And dandruff isn’t just annoying – it’s not good for your hair.
If you allow dandruff to get out of control, your hair may actually start thinning.
Harsh chemicals (shampoos and hair care products) will cause your scalp to dry. There are also other conditions, such as sensitivity issues or fungal infections, that can cause dandruff to present.
Coconut oil’s fatty acids work to eliminate dandruff in a multitude of ways:
- Anti-fungal
- Anti-bacterial
- Antiviral
This means many of the root causes of dandruff are stopped dead in their tracks. Plus coconut oil will moisturize the scalp, eliminating dandruff over time.
Pay attention: If you want flake-free hair, it’s time to put down those over-the-counter products and try coconut oil.
How to Use Coconut Oil to Combat Dandruff?
This is a simple process. You’ll want to:
- Mix 2 teaspoons of coconut oil with an essential oil (4 or 5 drops from tea tree, thyme, or lavender).
- Massage this mixture into the scalp.
- Cover with a shower cap.
- Rinse and wash after 30 minutes.
Keep in mind: You’ll want to repeat this process 2 – 3 times per week for best results.
