6 Reasons Why Olive Oil Is Great for Your Hair
In the Mediterranean, olive oil is like liquid gold. It’s poured generously onto nearly every dish. But this same oil that adds tremendous flavor to meals and boosts your physical health is also great for your hair.
From hot oil treatments to a finishing product, there are so many benefits to adding olive oil to your hair care routine.
Reason #6 – Bye, Bye Dandruff
Mix olive oil with a little bit of lemon juice to kiss those flakes good-bye. Dandruff is typically caused by dry skin. The olive oil moisturizes your scalp while the acid from the lemon juice breaks loose dandruff.
All you have to do is to follow these instructions:
- Mix a few tablespoons of lemon juice with a few tablespoons of olive oil.
- Massage onto your damp scalp.
- Let the mixture sit for 20 minutes.
- Then rinse and shampoo.
Keep in mind: You may need to shampoo a few times to get all of the olive oil out, depending on how fine or thick your hair is.
Reason #5 – Boost Strength & Shine
Toss your regular conditioner in the trash, and replace it with olive oil to restore moisture and shine. Olive oil can also remove sebum buildup, which keeps new follicles from forming and slows hair growth.
Rich in vitamins E and A, organic olive oil has the power to strengthen hair, too, by protecting the keratin in each strand and sealing in moisture.
Keep in mind: Add it to your shampoo (a small amount) or conditioner for a clean, healthy, hydrated mane.
Reason #4 – Put an End to Split Ends & Frizz
When the weather gets cold, hair is more vulnerable to splitting, breakage, frizz and flyaways. Applying just a dab of olive oil can smooth away frizz and unruly strands by adding weight and moisture to the hair.
Be careful not to add too much oil. A little goes a long way. Otherwise, you’ll wind up with greasy hair.
Keep in mind: Olive oil will rehydrate your hair and the nutrients in this health-promoting oil will feed your hair, helping it grow and stay strong.
Reason #3 – Make Your Hair Softer & More Manageable
When hair is dry and undernourished, it can be hard to style and manage. Forget using a curling iron or a flat iron – these only make your hair even drier.
Olive oil will add moisture to your hair while removing sebum and dirt, so your hair is more manageable and feels soft to the touch. This is all you need to do:
- Heat up a little olive oil (don’t let it get too hot).
- Apply it to your hair for an effective hot oil treatment.
- Let the mixture set on your hair for 30 minutes to restore some much-needed moisture.
Pay attention: Repeat this treatment one to two times per week for best results. Olive oil also acts as a deep conditioner, which will soften your mane and smooth away frizz.
Reason #2 – Boosts Hair Growth
Thinning hair and hair loss is often caused by a buildup of sebum on your scalp. Olive oil dissolves sebum buildup, allowing new hair follicles to form and preventing further hair loss.
Essential oils can also be added to promote hair growth. Rosemary, lavender, and cedarwood are excellent for hair growth. Just try this recipe:
- Mix enough olive oil with 5 drops each of cedarwood, lavender, and rosemary essential oils.
- Apply to your scalp.
- Massage for two minutes.
- Let the mixture sit for an hour before rinsing and shampooing.
Keep in mind: The massaging action will boost circulation to your scalp, which will feed your follicles the nutrients it craves.
Reason #1 – Conditions Your Hair
Olive oil can moisturize and nourish your hair better than any commercial products can. Use it weekly to deep condition your hair, restore shine and boost strength.
Apply the oil generously to your hair, focusing on the scalp and working your way to the ends. Don’t skimp on adding oil to the ends of your hair!
This is the area that needs treatment the most. Olive oil can help keep your ends looking healthy, and prevent splits in the future.
Olive oil can be used for more than just cooking. From boosting shine and strength to improving growth, smoothing away frizz and preventing split ends, olive oil makes a great addition to any hair care routine.
