Twists are the protective style that doubles as art. Two-strand twists, three-strand twists, flat twists, and Senegalese twists each create a distinct look while serving the same fundamental purpose: protecting natural hair from daily manipulation and environmental damage. They're faster to install than braids (typically 1-3 hours vs. 4-8 for box braids) and gentler on the hairline.
Types and Techniques
Two-strand twists are the foundation — two sections of hair wrapped around each other from root to tip. They can be worn as-is (a clean, defined look) or unraveled after a few days for a twist-out (one of the most popular natural hair styling techniques). Flat twists lie against the scalp in a technique similar to cornrows but using two strands instead of three. Senegalese twists use added hair for length and are a true protective style that can last 4-8 weeks.
The size of the twists dramatically changes the look. Mini twists (pencil-thin) take longer to install but create a sleek, defined look and last longer. Jumbo twists are faster but chunkier and more casual. Medium twists hit the sweet spot for most people. Twist direction matters too — twisting toward the face creates a softer look; twisting away creates more definition.
Maintenance and Twist-Outs
Twists need moisture. Spritz with a water-based leave-in every 2-3 days, seal with a light oil, and sleep with a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase. To keep twists looking neat, re-twist the edges (hairline twists) every 5-7 days. When it's time to take twists down, use a detangling oil and work from tips to roots — never pull or rip. The twist-out (unraveling twists for defined, stretched curls) works best when twists have been in for at least 3-5 days on damp-set hair. For braided variations that last longer, consider combining twists with braids in hybrid styles.
