Locs (also spelled locs, locks, or dreadlocks) are one of the most meaningful hair journeys you can take. Starting and Growing Your Locs

There are several methods to start locs: two-strand twists, coils, interlocking, freeform, and instant locs (crochet method). Two-strand twists are the most common starting method for type 4 hair — the hair is twisted into sections that gradually loc over time. Coils (also called comb coils) create smaller, more uniform starter locs. Interlocking pulls hair through itself using a tool for a tight, neat start. Freeform locs let hair naturally mat and loc without manipulation — the most organic approach but the least predictable in terms of size and shape.

The loc journey has distinct phases: starter locs (months 1-6, where sections are budding but can still unravel), teenage locs (months 6-12, the awkward phase of fuzzy, swelling sections), and mature locs (12+ months, fully locked and beginning to hang with weight). Natural hair textures (type 3C-4C) loc faster than straighter types. Hair as short as 3-4 inches can begin the loc process.

Maintenance and Styling

Mature locs are actually lower maintenance than most hairstyles. Washing every 1-2 weeks (yes, locs get washed — the "dirty hair locs better" myth is false), retwisting or interlocking every 4-6 weeks for neat roots, and regular moisturizing with lightweight oils. Avoid heavy waxes and buildup-prone products. Style versatility is enormous: loc updos, loc buns, half-up styles, colored locs, accessorized locs with beads or wraps. Locs are not a single look — they're a foundation for infinite creativity.
